Microsuction Ear Wax Removal
How Microsuction is performed
Examination: Our healthcare professional first examines the inside of the ear using a microscope, head loupe, or lighted magnification tool (otoscope). This allows for a clear, magnified view of the ear canal and eardrum, which is crucial for precision.
Removal: A small, sterile suction tube is then carefully inserted into the ear canal to gently vacuum out the excess wax.
Use of other tools: For very hard or impacted wax, our healthcare professional may also use other instruments, such as a small hook, to help dislodge the buildup.
Key benefits
Safe and precise: Because our healthcare professionals can see inside the ear, we can avoid sensitive areas, reducing the risk of damage to the eardrum or ear canal.
Dry procedure: Since no water is involved, there is a lower risk of infection compared to ear irrigation methods. It is also safe for people with a perforated eardrum, a recent ear infection, or a history of ear surgery.
Quick and immediate relief: The procedure typically takes only 15 to 30 minutes, with most of our patients experiencing immediate improvements in hearing and relief from discomfort.
No lengthy preparation: While some practitioners may recommend using drops to soften the wax beforehand, it is not always required.
Risks and side effects
Microsuction is considered very safe, but as with any medical procedure, it carries some minor risks and side effects.
Loud noise: The suction device can produce a loud, high-pitched noise, which some patients may find uncomfortable.
Dizziness: The procedure can sometimes cause temporary dizziness or vertigo, but this usually subsides quickly.
Discomfort: Some patients may feel a slight tickling sensation or minor discomfort during the procedure.
Rare complications: Though very rare, more serious complications like infection or injury to the ear canal or eardrum can occur, especially if the patient moves suddenly.
