Staple removal

How Is Staple Removal Performed

Why are staples removed?

  • Wound Healing:After a surgical procedure, staples are used to hold the edges of a wound together so they can heal. Once the skin is sufficiently healed, the staples are removed.

  • Prevent Complications:Leaving staples in too long can increase the risk of scarring and infection, so removal at the correct time is important.

When are staples removed?

  • Staple removal typically occurs between 5 and 14 days after the procedure, but this can vary depending on the wound's location and how quickly it heals.

  • Our registered nurse will advise on the appropriate removal time based on these factors.

How is it done?

  1. Cleaning: The wound and surrounding area are thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic solution.

  2. Preparation: Our registered nurse will keep the area dry and follow a consultant’s instructions on preparation.

  3. Using the Staple Remover:

    • A specialized, sterile staple remover tool is used. this is usually supplied by the hospital performing the treatment.

    • The thin plate of the remover is carefully inserted under the staple.

    • Pressure is applied to the handles, which bends the staple's prongs upward, allowing it to be lifted out of the skin.

  4. Aftercare: The wound is cleaned again, and sometimes a sterile strip or dressing may be applied to support the wound and promote healing.

Important Considerations

  • Professional Care: Medical staple removal should always be performed by our registered nurse who can perform the removal process at a CQC regulated premises which will help prevent infection and ensure proper wound care.

  • Scarring: While staples are quick to insert, they can sometimes leave behind more prominent "railroad track" scars than sutures if left in for too long.

  • Internal Staples:Some internal surgical staples are designed to remain in the body permanently to keep tissues connected and are not removed.
